We decide which is right and which is an illusion.

Mad World

In November 1982, Tears For Fears, a British new wave band, released their third single and first chart hit ‘Mad World.’ Written by Roland Orzabal and sung by Curt Smith, it’s a haunting and very touching song that brilliantly conveys a feeling of disconnection from other people.

Two decades later, the resurgence of ‘Mad World’ occurred when it was remade by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. This particular version established simplicity with the musical background and generated it as an international success for the second time.

In late 2004, a video was recorded of Gary Jules singing on the rooftop of a school building in Hoboken, New Jersey as he overlooks a group of children creating a number of formations on the pavement below. It adds a visually dramatic effect.

The song is potent and at the end we are gently reminded to expand our view of ourselves and each other.

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

The tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles, it’s a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no knew me
Hello teacher, tell me what’s my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles, it’s a very, very

Mad world, mad world
Enlargen your world
Mad world
